Post-Flood Renovation And Revitalization
The Lake Houston Family Y suffered significantly from Hurricane Harvey in 2017. It was inundated with eight feet of floodwater, leading to a complete gutting of the facility before it was reopened two years later.
But it was important to keep the Y operating, even on a limited level, through the construction. So over four phases of construction several parts became operational. For example, the pool and locker rooms were renovated first, the basketball gym was temporarily converted to the weight room and a large group exercise studio. Later, 10,000 square feet of the building was demolished, making way for a new, two-story structure that doubled the capacity of that space. In all, the revitalized Lake Houston Y is now 130,000 square feet serving the breadth of purposes the Y serves in this suburb that is 15 miles outside of the city of Houston.
