Swimming In LEED

Not every YMCA we design is certified LEED Gold. But when that’s what the client wants, that’s what we deliver.

The Spurlino Y, part of the Tampa Metropolitan Area Y organization, is so named because the lead donor (Cy Spurlino) is himself passionate about the environment. Our job was to make the facility 20 percent more efficient in its energy use, to reduce water consumption by 35 percent, to draw 15 percent of the facility’s energy from a 250-panel solar system, and to source building materials within a 100-mile radius. Because it was built in the tilt-wall method in place of concrete block, construction waste was minimized.

The result is a 32,000-square-foot indoor facility with a cycling studio, two group exercise rooms, a wellness center, and community meeting rooms. And this being Florida, it also has a 30,000-square-foot outdoor aquatic center that features an eight-lane lap pool, a warm-water therapy pool, and zero-depth family fun pool with slide and spray toys.

Gro provided the architectural design for this facility, complemented by the architect-of-record, FleischmanGarciaMaslowski, Creative Contractors, and Real Building Consultants.
